Our family stayed at Glen Mervyn Lodge when we took a weekend getaway from Perth to Collie. We wanted somewhere to relax after a full day sightseeing and hiking with views of the surrounding countryside. As it was winter, a wood fire was a bonus.

Glen Mervyn Lodge Location

This property, located in Mumballup in the Preston Valley, is a 15-minute drive from Collie. The lodge sits on 50 acres of land close to the Glen Mervyn Dam.

Glen Mervyn Lodge Accommodation

The renovated farmhouse is next to the owner’s residence but has a separate entrance and complete privacy. Parking is available right outside, making unpacking a breeze. Being in such a quiet location, it was peaceful and we couldn’t hear any noise.

Kitchen

As you walk in, the large kitchen is to the left and features a stovetop, fridge, microwave, and oven. We only stayed one night and opted for cheese and biscuits alongside our bottle of wine, so we didn’t use the kitchen facilities.

Living Areas

There are two living areas in Glen Mervyn Lodge, both with wood burners. It felt very homely walking in with the wood burner already lit. An informal dining table is provided here, which offers beautiful views over the countryside and natural jarrah bushland along with a lounge and tv.

The second living area features another wood burner, a bookcase with books and games, and a kids’ corner. The formal dining area is opposite, which seats six.

Bedrooms & Bathrooms

The lodge has four large bedrooms, all with queen beds, and one room also has two bunk beds meaning Glen Mervyn Lodge can sleep up to 12 guests. We found the bed quite soft, which some people prefer, and there were extra blankets for cold nights.

The two bathrooms both had showers with a bath in one of them. Being winter and no heating in the bathrooms, it was cold in the mornings.

Outside

The front of the cottage has a large barbecue area with a dining table and bench seats to enjoy the views. As you walk around the beautiful verandah, you will find chairs that allow you to enjoy the stunning vista and wildlife (we saw emus in the paddock).

There’s more seating at the back of the property overlooking a kids’ play area with a cubby house and play equipment. We enjoyed sitting out here with a glass of wine, watching the sunset over the hills.

Our Verdict of Glen Mervyn Lodge

We stayed on a cold winters weekend and found the house cold in the morning when the wood burners had gone out. However, plenty of blankets are provided and the price of the accommodation is very reasonable. I’m sure if more heaters were supplied, the cost to stay here would increase drastically. Just be prepared and bring some extra warm clothes with you.

This was the only negative for us. The accommodation had everything we needed, the wood fire was lovely, the host made sure we were happy, and the views were magical.

Mobile reception for Optus was a bit hit and miss, but what you’d expect being out of a big town.

For those of you with dogs, you’ll be happy to know that Glen Mervyn Lodge is dog-friendly.

We would stay here again as it was great value for money.
