Ultimate Coogee Beach Guide 2023 – Unveiling the Marine Wonders
Picture a day spent basking in the Australian sun, exploring a vibrant marine world, and savouring the delicious local seafood. Welcome to Coogee Beach.
As a local, I’ve been privileged to watch this beach evolve from being a gem to a favourite among locals and visitors.
In this guide, I’ll share insider tips, from the best swimming spots and scenic trails to the best local eateries.
Aboriginal History and Influence
Long before European settlers set foot on Coogee Beach, the land was home to the Noongar people, an Aboriginal community who lived in harmony with the coastal landscape.
The Noongar people lived in the South West region of Western Australia, which includes present-day Coogee Beach, for thousands of years. They were skilled hunters, gatherers, and fishers, drawing sustenance from the abundant sea, coastal, and inland resources.
For the Noongar community, the beach was not just a place of living and gathering but a spiritual landscape deeply ingrained with their traditions and storytelling.
In the Noongar language, Coogee means ‘body of water,’ reflecting the importance of the sea in their daily life and culture. The ocean was their source of food, a significant aspect of their spiritual beliefs, and a central part of their community interactions.
Exploring Coogee Beach’s Natural Beauty
Coogee Beach has recently gained recognition as one of Australia’s top 15 beaches, and it’s not hard to see why. With almost 4 kilometres of breathtaking, turquoise-fringed coastline, this beach offers a stunning spot to soak up the sun or explore the wonders beneath the surface.
At the beach’s northern end, adventurers can try the Coogee Maritime Trail, a circular route perfect for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts. Approximately 25 metres from the shore, this trail allows you to immerse yourself in the area’s rich history and natural beauty.
One of the trail’s highlights is the chance to see the remains of the Omeo, a ship that tragically sank in 1905. As you explore the underwater world, you’ll also encounter an array of sculptures and art installations, adding an artistic touch to your marine adventure.
Beyond the artefacts, Coogee Beach is teeming with abundant marine life. Prepare to come face to face with curious stingrays, playful seals, and dolphins.
