Where to Visit in Western Australia

Start by exploring the regions in Western Australia – each offers something different and depends on your interests to which one is for you.

How long do you need in Western Australia: Perth

The journey begins in Perth, a city that blends urban sophistication with natural beauty. To thoroughly explore Perth and experience its key attractions, a stay of about 3 to 4 days is recommended. This time frame allows you to visit iconic landmarks like Kings Park and the Perth Zoo and have some leisure time to explore the Swan River and enjoy the local dining scene.

If you plan to take day trips to nearby attractions like Swan Valley, Perth beaches, or Mandurah, consider extending your stay to a week to appreciate everything the region has to offer.

How long do you need in Western Australia: South West Region

The South West region is synonymous with world-class wineries, stunning coastlines, and forests. Sip and savour the region’s finest offerings, from robust reds to crisp whites, in settings that embody rustic elegance. Beyond its vineyards, the Margaret River region has a flourishing culinary scene and spectacular scenery.

To fully enjoy this area, allocating around 3 to 5 days is recommended. This 5-day Margaret River Itinerary provides ideas on how to spend your time here.

Exploring the picturesque towns of Pemberton, Walpole, Denmark, and Albany, along with the surrounding natural beauty, is a wonderful way to experience the diverse landscapes of Western Australia’s southern region.

To allow for a comprehensive visit to these areas, you should allocate another 7 to 10 days. This Margaret River to Albany Road Trip Itinerary includes Pemberton, Walpole, Denmark, and Albany stops.

How long do you need in Western Australia: Kimberley

Western Australia’s north west is an epic adventure that defies description. Broome, a coastal oasis where the Indian Ocean meets red cliffs, offers a mesmerising tapestry of landscapes.

Here, you can ride camels along the iconic Cable Beach, witnessing sunsets that bathe the horizon in hues of gold and crimson. The Kimberley region unveils a raw, untouched wilderness where ancient gorges, cascading waterfalls, and Aboriginal rock art tell tales of a long past.

Take a 7 to 14-day journey through this stunning region. Allow at least 2 to 3 days in Broome and another 5 to explore more of the Kimberley.

Use this Perth to Broome road trip itinerary to plan your route to Broome, or fly into Broome and explore from there. You can hire a vehicle in Broome or book a tour.

Crafting Your Perfect Western Australia Itinerary

How to get around Western Australia

Western Australia has an efficient network of domestic flights and roads, making travel between major destinations convenient.

The best time to visit Western Australia

The best time to visit Western Australia varies by region. I prefer heading south in summer, where it’s usually a bit cooler but still hot enough for the beach. Then north in winter, which is the dry season.

If you have a week in Western Australia

Options for a week in WA include a day in Perth followed by a road trip to Margaret River. Or fly to Exmouth and explore the Ningaloo Reef.

This Western Australia wildflower guide details where to visit to see the spectacular native wildflowers.

Consider spending a week in Perth and exploring the surrounding areas with day trips.

If you have ten days to two weeks in Western Australia

Two weeks gives you more time to explore – maybe explore the South West on a Perth to Albany road trip or head up the Coral Coast to Exmouth

If you have three weeks in Western Australia

This longer time means you can travel further – a road trip from Perth to Broome or the best of the South West Road Trip.
